Review

Towards the end of last year I had the privilege of reading and reviewing the first book in K.T Kings Little Eden series so I was excited to read the latest instalment and revisist this beautiful village of Little Eden and its wonderful resisdents. Little Eden Book Two, sees the village saved from being flattened and sold as real estate, but the residents need to raise four billion pounds to keep it safe.  There is also great change in the air, as three residents leave and a death signals a new era for the village. Charming and full of wonderful engaging characters, Little Eden will spirit you away to an oasis of peace and tranquility.  There is so much more to this book than meets the eye, it deals with some serious issues that mirror what is going on in our society today.

It was an absolute joy to spend a day back in the magical world of Little Eden and it’s charming residents. In both the previous book and this one, Sophie has to be my favourite character. She takes on the world, helping everybody else, taking all the troubles of Little Eden on her shoulders even though she has problems of her own. She is a very spiritual person, and a central part of the spirituality of Little Eden and it’s portals that protect from evil. I was excited to see that there was a love interest for Sophie, if she can let him in to her life. Her constant barrier is that she has Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, a condition that leaves her debilitated and in bed for several days at a time. This is something that I could relate to having similar health problems myself. Sophie sees her ilness as a barrier to love, feels that no one will want to spend their life with someone like her. If Sophie is the heroine of this book, the Robert Bartlett-Hart is the hero. He really comes into his own in this book, gaining confidence and taking action against those who want to harm Little Eden and don’t deserve to be part of its community. He is even willing to marry his horrible girlfriend Shilty, who is self centred and egostitisical, to ensure the safety of Little Eden. There is a supporting cast of memorable characters that were in the first book, and K.T King adds some humour with their names like Phillips Rider, president of the Equestrian Society.

You may think that this is just a charming read, about a quaint village with a touch of magic, but you would be wrong. K.T Kig writes with insight and knowledge of society and its values today. She writes of an inclusive society, tolerant of all religions, beliefs and race, a society where everyone is equal. She also looks into gender neutrality, how people may not identify with either gender and that all genders are equal; in the spiritual change in Little Eden we see the end of a patriarchal reign. I mentioned previuosly Sophie’s CFS, and this is used to highlight invisible disabilities, where you look perfectly healthy on the outside but suffering inside, and how this effects both the person with the ilness and those around them. There is so much going on is this book, and K.T King has the perfect balance of these important issues and the magical charm of Little Eden and its residents, that add a lightness to the plot.

Little Eden Book Two is an enchanting and magical read, with memorable characters, a fast paced, an engaging story line that deals with some very relevant issues and has recurring themes of feminism, good overcoming evil and a tolerant society.  This really is a feel good read and, to make this even better ,there are recipes at the back of book of the scumptious cakes that appear in the book.  I would love to spend time in Little Eden, recharging my batteries and to meet some of these wonderful characters. Bring a little magic into your life in this escapist read; a captivating and delightful read.
