My Review
So here I am again in Freya’s world with A Court of Wings and Ruin, the third book in Sarah J Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses series. I have become a huge fan of these books, more than I thought I would, and they just keep getting better. This third book is is an adrenile rush that sees the Courts of Prythia at war wth the King of Hybern and the High Lords need to put their differences aside if they are to win the war.
One of the things I love about this sereies is the development of Freya and her role as High Lady of the Night Court. Again in this book she finds herself in some dangerous situations both physical and psychological and always meets her challenges face on, not shying away from difficult decisions. In this book we also see her with ther sisters, Elaine and Nesta as they join her in Velaris. Nesta is blunt, sarcasting and at times scathing in her relationships with others, that brought a wry smile to my face. I also enjoyed the new characters brought in, especially the High Lords of the other courts and their retinue. The power play, the egos the different relationships and who could they each trust made for a fascinating read.
Sarah J Maas’s writing and plotting is sublime. She certainly knows how to build tension, and grab and hold the readers attention. This was a book that gave me an adreniline rush and had my foot tapping with tension (something I do normally when watching Formula 1) as I was so engrossed in the story and the characters. Her imagination in describing Pyrthian, the Courts and their different inhabitants is amazing, I loved that she brought them all to life with her vivid and detailed writing. The action packed fighting scenes were heart stopping, the sights and sounds of the battlefield evocative and real and set against the passion of Rhysand and Freya, their love of their family and country make a heady cocktail for the reader.
I feel like I am repeating myself when I say that A Court of Wings and Fury is my favourite book yet. I feel these books have become a huge part of my life, not just in reading them myself but from my daughter in law and my daughter’s friends who have also fallen in love with them. I now have two books in the series left and am really excited to find out what happens next.
