Synopsis
If the Night Stalker is watching, you’re already dead.
In the dead of a swelteringly hot summer’s night, Detective Erika Foster is called to a murder scene. The victim, a doctor, is found suffocated in bed. His wrists are bound and his eyes bulging through a clear plastic bag tied tight over his head.
A few days later, another victim is found dead in exactly the same circumstances. As Erika and her team start digging deeper, they discover a calculated serial killer – stalking their victims before choosing the right moment to strike.
The victims are all single men, with very private lives. Why are their pasts shrouded in secrecy? And what links them to the killer?
As a heat wave descends upon London, Erika will do everything to stop the Night Stalker before the body count rises, even if it means risking her job. But the victims might not be the only ones being watched: Erika’s own life could be on the line.
Review
The Night Stalker is the second in the DCI Erica Foster series. I absolutely loved the first book, The Girl in the Ice, so was excited to hear the next instalment. Like the previous book, this is fast paced with plenty of twists and turns to throw you off the sent. Robert Bryndza is clever in his writing in that he chapters are fairly short and all end at a decisive point that makes you think ‘just one more chapter’. As well as the investigation there are chapters where the narrative is centred on the murderer, so this is not so much a whodunit, but more to do with the race against time for Erica and her team to catch the killer. This time the murders centre around the deaths of single men, that don’t seem to have anything in common, and their deaths are made to look like they have committed suicide. It is Erica who sees through this and realises that there is a serial killer on the loose.
What I really loved about this book was that Robert Bryndza gave more of an insight into Erica and her past. This gives an understanding of how the deamons from her past motivate and drive her in the present. We also see her build on the relationships within her team, especially with Moss and Peterson, of whom we also learn more but her nemesis Sparks is still there causing problems for her. The audiobook was narrated Jan Cramer again, who really breathes life into the characters and makes this book a pleasure to listen to. I have since downloaded the next three books in the series to keep me going.
The Night Stalker, whether in audiobook or print, is fast paced, dark and suspenseful read. Brilliantly written, wonderful characterisation, and a thrilling plot line come together to make this a captivating read.
Another series I really must get round to!
