Review
The Moor is the twelfth book in the DCI Ryan series which is set in the North East of England. The Moor in the title is the Town Moor in Newcastle, an area of common land where events like the Hoppings fair and the the circus are held. In this book the focus is on O Neills travelling circus that comes to the moor. Samantha O Neill turns up at Ryan’s house claiming she remembers the death of her mother ten years previously and thinks the murderer is someone a the circus. Ryan and Philips take on the cold case and hunt for the murderer before they strike again.
I love the DCI Ryan books, picking one up is like going for a coffee with old friends; you know the characters, their quirks and personalities and feel comfortable in their company. Having said that, this book can be read as a standalone, there are references to past events but they don’t impact on the plot of this book but you will get more out of it if you have read the series. As well as the main storyline about the hunt for the killer of Sam’s mum, there is a second murder investigation when bodies of male victims start to appear over the North East which seems to be gangland related. DC Lowerson is put in charge of this investigation with the help of his partner Yates, as they go after one of the big drug dealers. Both plot lines keep you on the edge of your seat as they move towards their shocking conclusions.
DCI Ryan may try to come across as the hard man but he does have a softer side. Samantha O Neill is a catalyst in this book and brings out a different side not only to Ryan but also to Philips and MacKenzie. All three are very taken with Samantha, who maybe be vulnerable now she has remembered details of her mother’s death but is no one’s fool. She is an intelligent and feisty girl who brings out the maternal side of MacKenzie. There is a touch of romance in this book as well between Lowerson and Yates; however Lowerson is a bit blind to Yates’s feelings towards him.
The Moor is another first class crime thriller from L.J Ross. Fast paced, and twisty plot lines combined with Louise Ross’s wonderful writing style makes this book such a joy to read; this series is one of the only ones that I know I will read in one sitting. As with the previous books there is a touch of the Geordie humour and sarcasm, and plenty of banter between Ryan and Phillips to that lightens the plot line up. After finishing this book I am now really excited about the next instalment in this fantastic series due out in July.
