August has been a strange month for me as I really lost my reading mojo. It wasn’t anything to do with the quality of the books, it was I just couldn’t sit and read, I was always finding other things to do. I can’t remember the last time this happened to me, I think it had something to do with my mental and physical health, I really have been all over the place, but am working on getting myself back on track slowly.  In August I did still manage to read nine books, but only blogged seven as I have been trying to get ahead for September. Here are my top reads of the month.

1662078B-A93D-47FF-BBD6-91953E6D8845The Final Cut by S.J Watson. This is the new thriller from the author of the phenominal Before I Go To Sleep, so had a lot to live up to, and it didn’t disappoint. Alex is a film maker wanting to mae a film about life in a small town, and finds her self in Blackwood Bay, a place she has ties to. But as Alex devles deeper into the residents she falls upon the story of three missing girls. This book is a rollercoaster of a journey that gains pace hurtling towards an unknown but frightening ending. Fascinating characters with dark back stories, and a thrilling and menacing plot this is an amazing psychological thriller that I highly recommend.

50422607-A4C0-43FE-B276-EDE45CFE0341A Room Made Of Leaves by Kate Grenville. Ever since reading The Secret River nearly ten years ago I have been a fan of Kate Grenville’s books so jumped at the chance to read and review A Room Made Of Leaves. Like previous books, the plot is set in the penal colony of New South Wales in the late eighteenth century, and is the story of Elizabeth Macarthur. A lot is known of her husband who rose through the ranks and became a wealthy business man, but this is her story, and I think a lot more interesting. Kate Grenville really captures the social and cultural history of this period, and shows the courage of a woman who faced adversity head on and turned it into a positive. Fans of historical fiction should definitley read this book.

A56FC791-125B-4230-B8FE-EE3B06AC8F95A Kingdom of Copper by S.A Chakraborty. This is the book that helped me get my reading mojo back. In June I read and reviewed The City of Brass the first book in S.A Chakraborty’s Daevabad Trilogy and fell in love with her fantasy world of Daevabad, so thought I would try the second book The Kingdom Of Copper. It was wonderful to be back in this magical world of the djinn, with Prince Ali, Nahri and Dara. This is beautifully written, rich and colourful in detail and totally captivated me like the first book. Full of wonderful characters, political intrigue, and a thrilling plot that leads to a surprising ending which left me wanting to read the final book The Empire of Gold, but that may have to wait a couple of months.

You can read my full review of these books and the others I reviewed in August on my main blog page. In September I’m really looking forward to read The Evening and the Morning by Ken Follett, all nine hundred pages of it. As always thank you for reading my blog and following me on social media.
