Review

Over the past year or so I have read three of K.L Slater’s books, and have found all of them a brilliant read.  Blink is my fourth book by her and similar to others is based on a premise that we all fear, and that could happen to anyone; in this case it’s a child going missing.  Toni is widowed and decides to move nearer her mother so she can have help with her five year old daughter Evie.  The move is difficult on both of them, Toni has to start a new job and is living on a housing estate she doesn’t like, Evie has left all her friends behind and start a new school. One day Toni is stuck in traffic and late to pick up Evie and when she gets to the school Evie has disappeared, no one saw her go. The living nightmare begins.

The plot is narrated by Toni in the present day and three years previously in the run up to Evie going missing.  What is really interesting is that in the present day Toni is in hospital after suffering a stroke.  She has locked-in-syndrome meaning she can see and hear what is going on around her but can’t communicate in any way. In her mind she goes back to Evie’s disappearance, willing herself to get better so she can find her daughter.

As a character Toni is someone I had great empathy for.  In the past she is recently widowed, is desperately trying to cope with her own grief and bring up her daughter.  Her mother is very critical of Toni’s parenting skills and not very sympathetic to her situation which its more pressure on Toni.  In the present she can hear and see the doctors but has no means of communication and she knows they are planning to turn off her machines as they don’t see any improvement, which is a frightening scenario in its own right.

K.L Slater is a master at building tension and suspense. In the present we know that we are moving to the point of Evie’s disappearance, the fear and shock that she has disappeared from school and not seen in the three intervening  years.  In the present it is Toni’s race against time to try and get some movement back and find out what happened to Evie before the doctors let her die    From reading the previous books I knew that at some point there would be a shock moment that would turn the plot on its head, so in a way I was second guessing it.  But OMG I did not see this twist, I was so shocked I went back a few pages and re read it at least three times to make sure I was reading it correctly; it was mind blowing.

Blink is another fast paced, chilling and suspenseful thriller and places K.L Slater as the queen of the OMG moment in my opinion (I think I am still getting over the shock of it). Both timelines play on two of our most awful fears, our child going missing and being unable to communicate after an illness whilst being aware of everything around us which adds to the suspense and dread of this book. The tense build up, the rising dread, the shocking twist make this a breathtaking and stupendous read, and one you won’t be able to put down.
