One thing’s for sure: the Costa del Sol will never be the same again.
Review
Costa del Churros follows four very different women Belinda, Julia, Georgina and Laura who should be living the dream, in sunny Spain, but maybe it is more of a nightmare. The only thing they have in common is a sense of something missing from their lives, and the fact that they have all found themselves taking Flamenco lessons from the enigmatic Carmen. Carmen’s teaching methods are unusual to say the least and over the course of these lessons the women become friends and learn just as much about themselves as dancing.
The narrative is split between each of the four women, their lives, their dreams and of course their learning at the hands of Carmen. It did take me quite a while to get into this book and the characters; the opening chapter just went straight in with no preamble that I found hard to get my head around. However, one I did get into the book I couldn’t put it down. Carmen has to be the star of this book, she is almost a fairy godmother to the women and has the knack of knowing what they need to improve their lives, and has some wonderful phrases and mantras. Needless to say all four find themselves in some pretty bizarre situations, but through this become firm friends. There are plenty of laughs in this book as well as some emotional scenes as the women begin to open up and take charge of their lives. The characters themselves are brilliantly depicted, and I liked their diversity and the fact that they were relatable.
Costa Del Churros is a fabulous read full of humour, fun and interesting characters. It may be a bit of a slow burner but once you get into it you will be gripped to the plot and the lives of the main characters, and may fancy a few ‘churros’ yourself (doughnut style fingers with chocolate sauce). So take yourself to sunny Spain, meet some wonderful new friends and enjoy this well written and delightful book.
