June Abridged; my monthly book round up.

In June I have read an eclectic mix of books which I love doing as it keeps the interest alive for me. As always, its hard to pick my top three as all ten books read have been brilliant reads in their own right, but here are my choices.

41IFGQXG4mLBlack Summer by M.W Craven.  This is the second book in the Washington Poe series that started with The Puppet Show. Poe and his favourite sidekick. technology genius Tilly Bradshaw, are on the case of a murder victim who seems to have reappeared after six years, and then seems to disappear again leaving Poe as the prime suspect in the second disappearance.  The relationship between Poe and Tilly is really endearing if a bit strange; Poe is sarcastic, anti authority but a dogged detective where as Tilly is a genius at solving problems but has no social skills so says things as she sees them. With a dark and complex plot this is one of the best crime books I’ve read in a long time.

51vd5Gys5qLDaisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid.  This was a truly original read, and one  had been looking forward to reading.  Written as an interview this books looks at musical career of Daisy Jones and The Six who rose to fame in the 60’s and 70’s. Looking back we see the different perspectives the band members, the arguments, highs, lows and addictions; this is a real sex, drugs and rock n’ roll story.  Brilliantly written and reading like a biography I had to keep reminding myself that this was a work of fiction. A book I think we will talk about all year.

41meVXOnV1LThe Labyrinth of the Spirits by Carlos Ruiz Zafón.  This is the fourth book in the Cemetery of Forgotten Books series that started with the bestseller The Shadow of the Wind.. I am a huge fan of these books that are a genre of their own; they combine historical fiction, mystery, thriller, and a touch of the supernatural.  At over eight hundred pages this is not a light read and certainly not a book you can speed read; Carlos Ruiz Zafón is one of those writers who doesn’t waste a word in his writing. The plot is fairly complex and there are a vast array of characters but once I found my feet I couldn’t put this book down. A must read for fans of his earlier books, and hopefully it will intrigue new readers to the series.

I hope I have inspired you to pick up one of the books I have reviewed this month, I have really enjoyed reading them and sharing my thoughts with you.  Looking forward to July I will be reviewing new books by Lesley Pearse, Rowan Coleman, Karen Swan and Claire Douglas.  Thank you for reading this months reviews and sharing the book love and I look forward to sharing my thoughts in July x.
