It’s always a pleasure to welcomeTim Walker on my blog, and today he is celebrating the publishing of his new book of short stories and poetry. Perverse was published on April 2nd, and I know a lot of people are struggling concentrating on longer novels at the moment, so a book of short stories and poems is the perfect reading material.  Below is a poem Tim wrote for his daughter Cathy, and I think you will agree with me that it is beautiful and full of emotion. Full details of Perverse and a profile of Tim Walker are below.

Ode to Cathy

Determined buds push through the snow

And flower in the warming glow

The blooms of parental love and guidance

I watched you learn to sing and dance

Holding hands on our cliff edge walk

You say I never listen when you talk

I reply that I listen whilst I also think

The lighthouse appears as the sun starts to sink.

The tiny black midges do start their attack

As the gloom settles in on our long walk back.

You told me of wolves; superheroes saving kittens

You see, my dear, I always do listen

Whilst I may be going through lists in my head

You might be wondering when next you’ll be fed

You shock me by saying you’d like to study science

Where empirical truths shout out their defiance

To study human nature and why we’re so mean

And find a new drug to cure the capitalist gene

It’s a matter for science, this climate change thing

But we hope common sense will soon spread its wings.

Perverse – a collection of short prose and verse

By Tim Walker

PERVERSE is an eclectic collection of short, snatched memories and random ideas that tumbled out of a monthly spoken word event called The Innerverse. After two years, I had amassed plenty of odd poems and short stories, and began to pull this collection together during corona virus quarantine in March 2020.

‘Perversity’, is an obstinate urge or contrary behaviour; a wilful desire to not conform.

That made me think – life can sometimes be perverse – full of contradictions, disappointments, grief and sheer bloody-mindedness. But despite this, our sense of what is right and our collective willingness to submit to the rule of law, provides a counter balance that somehow gets us through.

I hope you enjoy this collection of verse and prose – a pastiche of my life, a nod to history and current affairs, a wistful look back, a hope for better days, and acelebration of life and all its riches.
