Synopsis

Family weddings can be hell…

…and, marooned in Italy for her cousin’s nuptials, Ailsa can be forgiven for thinking that this one is worse than most. With the bride and groom at loggerheads and the guests in uproar, it is a million miles away from the rest and relaxation she’d been hoping for.

And then suddenly, in the middle of the mayhem, she comes face-to-face with Nick, the man she walked out on just a few months earlier.

How can Ailsa help get the wedding back on track when she and Nick can’t stop arguing? But if they do, she might remember why she fell in love with him in the first place – and then there really would be trouble.

Review

An all expenses paid holiday to Tuscany for her cousin’s wedding sounds exactly what Ailsa needs. On half term from her job at school in a poor and deprived area with some problem pupils, and recently single, Ailsa intends to make the most of her week. That is until Nick, her ex turns up at the hotel, the bride and groom start to argue, her older sister makes an appearance and she is adopted by a dog determined to cause trouble. In amongst all the mayhem and trying to help her cousin’s wedding go ahead can Ailsa remember why she fell in love with Nick and find her own happy ever after.

There are times in life when only one genre of book will do and this is what brought me to read Save The Date!, a book that has been on my shelf for about six years. I really wanted a nice easy read, a bit of humour, a great heroine and set in my spiritual home of Italy, and this book ticked all boxes for me. Family weddings offer so much opportunity for disaster as well as joy, and here we have a wedding planner from hell, the mother of the bride having a nervous breakdown, an agitated father of the bride and the groom who thinks the bride maybe having an affair. There is plenty of humour and wit, balanced with the emotions of a love story that kept me addicted to this book.

I loved Ailsa as a character, the perfect romantic heroine. She is a teacher in a school in a deprived area, and will do anything to help her students, including not moving to a nicer private school. She is careful with money, which her ex wasn’t  which is why her relationship with Nick ended and she seems a generally a kind caring person,  and takes in a stray dog, Arthur. Even when she finds herself solving the bride and grooms problems she doesn’t complain. She has plenty of humerous moments, including chasing the dog through the hotel whilst it leaves carnage in it’s wake and following Nick into the men’s sauna during an argument, and yes all the men are naked. Of course these books are fairly predictable and I loved being part of her and Nick’s journey back together, even if it took a while.

Save The Date! was the perfect medicine for me when I needed to escape, in a bookish sense; it had Italy, cocktails, sun, sea, romance and a cute dog. I loved the diverse characters including the seemingly ill matched bride and groom, Ailsa’s not so nice older sister Kitty and of course the handsome Nick. There was so much going on this book that it held my attention throughout and I was finished before I knew it, in a good way.  So, if you fancy an escape to Tuscany, and like sharp and witty prose then look no further than Save The Date!.
